Summer Checklist: Appliances to Run a Checkup on Before the Summer Heat Arrives
As a good rule of thumb, you should have some of the appliances in your home checked before the summer months get here. That way, you have peace of mind that everything is in proper working order. If the technician finds a problem, you have the opportunity to get it fixed early on.
Going through a summer appliance checklist is also a great way to save money in the long run, apart from investing in homeowners insurance. The last thing you want is to operate an appliance without knowing that it’s okay. Doing that could make a minor problem worse and far more expensive to repair. This is also a great way to identify any potential safety risks.
To enjoy a safe and cool summer, you should have the following appliances checked before the heat arrives.
As you probably expected, the air conditioner is at the top of the list. After all, this is the appliance that runs almost non-stop every day during the summer to keep the interior of your home cool. To ensure optimal performance, you don’t want to delay having this checked.
An HVAC professional will perform a thorough inspection. That includes checking the freon, wiring, and other system components. Ultimately, this will help the air conditioning unit to run properly and efficiently. That way, you can cool your home and spend less on your utility bills.
You might not realize dryers are the leading cause of house fires. This is because lint becomes trapped. Then, as this appliance runs, it can cause the lint to ignite. Keep in mind, this is not the lint trap that needs cleaning every day or two. Rather, the trap that carries lint to the outside.
During the winter, you probably washed a lot of blankets and towels. Those two items alone produce a significant amount of lint. So, you want to contact someone in this field to have the trap checked and cleaned.
If your house has a sump pump, you’ll want to have this inspected before summer, as well. Depending on the part of the country where you live, you might experience torrential rainfall during the summer. If the sump pump is inoperable, you will end up with an expensive and messy problem.
This is also the time of the year when you want to have a pool’s pump, filter, and other electrical systems checked. As you can imagine, not opening the pool for the kids once the temperatures soar would make you a very unpopular person.
A pre-summer checkup is also recommended for any outdoor plumbing systems you have. For example, if you use an inground sprinkler system to keep your lawn green and beautiful, you want to make sure everything is fine. Especially if your state had a harsh winter, an expert would look at the pipes to see if anything cracked.
You should even have your kitchen appliances checked, specifically the refrigerator and ice maker. Even with the door shut, hot summers can affect the way a refrigerator operates. Rather than discover a bunch of damaged food, it’s worth taking precautionary measures.
Where to Go for Help
As long as you have appliances checked before the summer and then again before winter, you shouldn’t have any issues. However, if a problem does arise with an appliance, you have two solutions. First, you could file a claim under your home warranty. Second, you could have your homeowners insurance take care of the problem.
Remember, just because your appliances all run fine now doesn’t mean that something won’t go wrong during the hottest summer months.
